Basset Rescue is an organization dedicated to saving bassets from death row. Our mission is to rescue, spay, neuter, vaccinate and re-home Bassets as well as educate people on this beautiful breed.

Rescued Bassets come from kill-shelters, no-kill shelters, are picked up as strays, or are relinquished by owners due to divorce, incarceration, death or because they just aren't wanted any more.

As a Rescue Organization, we take in homeless dogs, spay or neuter them (no exceptions), check for parasites, vaccinate and provide any other medical care necessary to get them healthy. We then attempt to match the right basset with the right home. Please check out the adoption process for more information.

BRCC carefully screens applicants to ensure the best home environment for our Bassets. Rescue dogs have lost the security of their original homes and some have been abused, abandoned or neglected. Our goal is to place our Rescues in stable homes where they will be allowed to live out the rest of their lives soaking up all the love and care the adopting family can provide.

Adoption Information

There are many homeless Bassets in need of loving homes and we are anxious to place them all. However, adopting a Basset takes an exceptionally responsible and conscientious owner. All pets rely on humans for their existence. They require our love, attention, and care to flourish, becoming the perfect pets that all Bassets have the potential to be. As a rescue group we will not accept an impulse decision. Please evaluate your own lifestyle, home environment and availability for the Basset. If you decide to pursue an adoption, please look over the following requirements of all adopting families and evaluate if all can be met.

  • The rescue dog will be a house pet and receive all care and attention necessary to ensure its health and well being.
  • The dog will not be permitted to run free or off-leash or out of immediate control. When outside, the dog will NEVER be staked or chained.
  • Indoor sleeping quarters will be provided for the dog.
  • The dog will, at all times, wear a collar with current Rabies tag and ID tag.
  • BRCC will be notified at least ONE WEEK prior to any change of address.
  • The rescue Basset will be kept for so long as it shall live.
  • The rescue Basset is adopted as is and the owner assumes full risk for the dog.
  • An adoption fee ($200 - $350, depending on age of dog) is required at the signing of the adoption contract.
Once an application is completed, it will be evaluated and matched to a Basset that would best fit your situation. If a Basset is not available at the time, you may be referred to another Basset Rescue or placed on a waiting list, which ever is preferred. A Rescue agent will call for informal interview and also to arrange a home visit. The home visit consists of a safety check of all fences (no holes, loose boards, etc.), gate latches and doorways. This is not a cleaning inspection. Our concern is for the safety of the dog, not the fact that your home may not have been dusted in a month. The rescue dog may accompany the rescue agent during the home visit (depending on location and travel involved). The Basset will be introduced to the prospective family and existing pets. This is done to evaluate the reaction of all involved. Are the cats going to tolerate the dog, is the dog going to chase the cat, is the owner going to keep his or her sanity? All interactions and responses need to be considered. The dog will then accompany the rescue agent back home so the family can discuss the meeting and make a decision. We ask that the family contact BRCC within 48 hours to accept or decline the rescue Basset.

If the family decides to adopt, the Basset will be delivered at the earliest available time. An Adoption Agreement will be signed by both BRCC and the adopting family. An Adoption Fee will be collected and then, the once homeless Basset has a new family to love and be loved by.
