Automobile Enthusiasts Rev Up Weekend

Automobile enthusiasts got a chance to "rub elbows" with famous race car drivers, producers, directors and actors last week at the first Southern Yosemite Automotive Film Festival from March 21 through 25. At receptions held Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings people met Corvette Hall of Famer Doug Hooper, six-time NASCAR champ Ray Elder, Richard Kiel of "Cannonball Run II," and the casts and crews of "Hot Rod Horror" and "Finish Line" The receptions were catered by Yosemite Coffee and Roasting Company.

On Saturday, the Oakhurst Area Chamber of Commerce sponsored a reception during which James Garner was given the Southern Yosemite Lifetime Achievement Award, accepted by his friend automotive author Tom Madigan. Presentations were also made to Scooter Patrick, Davey Jordan, Dick Guldstrand, Doug Hooper, Guy Bee and other greats of the automotive and film industries.

All week automotive films were shown at the Met Cinema in Oakhurst. If that didn't keep motors humming, there were plenty of car clubs and individuals parked around town or cruising attracting lots of attention. On Sunday, the Harry Baker Boys and Girls Club provided breakfast, then it was off on a Poker Run through the scenic mountains of Mariposa County. Riders visited Butterfly Creek Winery and Mount Bullion Winery. They also stopped at one of the state's largest NAPA stores for tri-tip sandwiches and entertainment. The poker run was sponsored by the Mariposa County Chamber of Commerce, the Oakhurst Area Chamber of Commerce and the Southern Yosemite Automotive Film Festival.

Silent auctions were a draw for many automobile enthusiasts. Items signed by celebrities were being auctioned in the lobby of the Met Cinema. Raffles were held during the week and guests were given a view of 50s fashions on Saturday at a fashion show hosted by Carollyn DeVore Studios.
